Mariah Carey was one the performers at the MTV Japan's 2008 VMA which took place yesterday. Check out her performance of 'I'll Be Loving U Long Time' below:

Having been largely underwhelmed by many of Ms. Cannon's performances as of late, I must say I really enjoyed this. 'I'll Be Loving You Long Time' is one of the few tracks that I gravitated toward on 'E=MC²', so it's great to see her do the song justice live - most especially vocally. The ending high-notes were a great touch. More performances like this, please.

The video for Madonna's latest single 'Give It 2 Me' premiered today. Both the song and vid are kinda underwhelming coming off the brilliance of '4 Minutes'. IMO 'Hard Candy' has tracks that are more deserving of the single treatment such as 'Candy Shop' and 'Dance 2night'.

R&B star Usher continued along the promo trail for his new album 'Here I Stand' by performing a set for Good Morning America's Summer Concert series this morning live from New York City's Bryant Part. The 29 year old performed 'This Ain't Sex', current single 'Moving Mountains' as well as the #1 smash 'Love In This Club':

Despite the fact that I'm not all that impressed with Usher's latest material, there is no denying his unmatched performing skills. Good stuff.

50 Cent's Long Island House Burns Down; Possible Arson A raging fire broke out at a Long Island, New York home owned by rapper 50 Cent early this morning. Speaking to TMZ, the local fire department have labelled the fire 'highly suspicious'. Check out the report below:

The fire broke out at the six bedroom, five bath house in Dix Hills, NY around 5:00 AM. Six people, including the rapper's ex Shaniqua Tompkins and their 10-year-old son Marquise, were in the house. They all were transported to the hospital and treated for smoke inhalation.

The Chief of the Dix Hills Fire Department tells TMZ that dogs are currently searching the burned out rubble, as the intensity of the fire made it highly suspect. The Chief says they're searching for what substance possibly could have been used as an igniter.

The house has been the subject of a bitter dispute between Fiddy, whose real name is Curtis Jackson, and Tompkins. The rapper reportedly bought the home -- one of the biggest cribs in the area -- for a cool $2.4 mil in January 2007. Last month he tried to evict Tompkins and Marquise from the house, demanding she pay him $4,500 a month in rent.

Story developing ...

UPDATE 10:25 AM ET: Suffolk Police tell us they received a call at 5 AM. An off-duty police officer was driving by and stopped to help rescue the victims inside the house. We're told injuries to all six victims -- including Tompkins -- are non-life threatening and they have been treated and released from the hospital. While they are currently investigating the fire's cause, we're told 50 Cent is not a suspect at this point.

Without doing the inevitable finger pointing, this is the most suspicious 'ish' I've heard heard in a long while. I mean 50 & Shaniqua were seen having a heated arguement on a New York street just this Monday; 50 even had to be restrained. SMH...

New Nas Album Cover As reported early last week, rapper Nas succumbed to mounting pressure from the media and critics alike to change the name of his forthcoming LP - which was controversially titled 'N*gger'.

Word has it, Nas has insisted the album now be title-less so as to not fully comply with his critics. Anyway, set for a July 3rd release, the cover art for the album surfaced today. It's evident he's not shying away from the original album title's message. I'm still kinda on the fence about this whole project. I guess time will tell if it works in his favour.

Diddy Eyes Leona CollaboDiddy is currently putting the wheels in motion for the follow-up to his last LP 2006's collabo heavy 'Press Play'. Speaking on who he'd like to work with on the record, the music mogul revealed that he has his sights set on UK singing sensation Leona Lewis:

The rapper explained that, following his pairing with Christina Aguilera on his last album, 2006's 'Press Play', he wants Lewis to feature prominently on his next.

P. Diddy, real name Sean Combs, told the Daily Mirror: "I want that girl on my next album. I'm a huge fan. Not only is she so, so beautiful, she has a great voice. She is extremely talented, and it's great she's from England.

"She has one of the best voices I've heard. I'm already thinking about my next album and definitely want to make it work, so she's on it.

"I had Christina Aguilera on my last album, but it's all about Leona Lewis on my next." {Source}

Hmm. Here's hoping he tends to the Making The Band 4 clan first, all of whom are in dire need to new singles, promotion etc. Then again, this is Diddy...

Part 1: Moving Mountains, Here I Stand

BET aired an Usher 'Here I Stand' special to celebrate the release of the singer's album earlier this week. The 29 year old performed select tracks from the record as well as an old favourite ('Yeah').

Part 2: Yeah, Love In This Club

Great performances.

In other Usher news, despite reports that 'Here I Stand' has been illegally downloaded more than half a million times, the singer is still on course to have one of the highest first-week sales so far this year with first day sales of 146,000 according Nielsen SoundScan. To get an idea of what the album is set to sell first week, one need not look further than Mariah Carey, whose 'E=MC²' LP sold 154,000 on its first day out, going on to shift 463,000 units by the week's end back in April. Though the numbers are looking very promising, it's a far cry from the 1.1 Million Usher's last LP 'Confessions' sold first week. {Source}

Rihanna - 'Disturbia' 'Disturbia' is the next single to be lifted from Rihanna's forthcoming 'Good Girl Gone Bad: Reloaded' re-release (due June 17th). At the risk of being labelled a 'hater', the Synth-Pop cut continues the mediocre tone set by its predecessor 'Take A Bow', offering little in the way of substance or originality. With much better tracks such as 'Breakin' Dishes' and 'Push Up On Me' sitting unreleased on the album's original track-list, it's hard to understand why neither was released instead of this rubbish. Seeing as nearly everything her promo team she touches these days turns to gold, it wouldn't surprise me if this one shoots to the top of the charts. SMH...

New 50 Cent MTV Show To Uplift Kids In a welcome change to the controversy that usually surrounds a 50 Cent story, it has been announced that the G-Unit leader has partnered with MTV for a new reality show - with a twist:
Taking the "Charm School" recipe one step further, 50 Cent has teamed with MTV to create a reality show that is actually aimed at helping the community. In his new, still untitled, elimination show, 16 young kids will compete to master the skills that elevated 50 from the streets to the top of the charts. But here's my favorite part: Instead of the winner receiving a cash prize, the last one standing will actually be awarded a full scholarship to college. {Source}
Though I wholesomely commend 50 for partaking in such a show, I did have to chuckle at the 'master the skills that elevated 50 from the streets to the top of the charts' part. Perhaps we'll see the kids talk mess about the top contender near the time for their task? Just a thought lol...

Tricky: Hip-Hop To Blame For Violent BritainBritish musician Tricky (no I don't know who he is either) blames Hip-Hop for rising crime in the UK, insisting 'it has created a generation of angry and violent young men'. Check out the report via Contact Music below:

The artist, who mixes rock, hip-hop and pop in his music, claims parts of Britain are now more dangerous than New York, and the popular hip-hop culture must be held responsible.

Tricky - who has performed with Massive Attack - says, "I love hip-hop, but it has to take some responsibility for the gun culture we've got over here. We're getting super-violent. You can walk around the Bronx for days on end and nobody bothers you. "In England, you can say the wrong thing in a pub and, before you know it, you've got a bottle over your head or a bullet in your brain. English people have got quicker tempers."

His genuine opinion? Maybe. A publicity stunt? A possibility. Stupid? Hell yes! Granted the crime rate here in the UK has risen in recent years (and is a hot topic in the media at present), it's very unoriginal to take aim at Hip-Hop. To say the mainstream UK Hip-Hop movement is lacking would be an understatement, so I'm assuming he means US Hip-Hop (the only kind we're exposed to on mass). Yet, he's contradicting himself in his 'parts of England are tougher than the Bronx' statement, as it's largely the same thing we're listening to around the globe. What's more, without generalising, it's highly unlikely that you'd find your average Hip-Hop listener in a 'pub'. For someone who claims to 'love Hip-Hop', he sure did little to show it.

In a broader context, I wanted to know if you feel Hip-Hop is responsible for violence/crime in your own locality/country? If so, why? If not, why?

Tyra Covers The New York Times Supermodel turned media mogul Tyra Banks appears on the June 1st cover of The New York Times Magazine. In her feature, the talk show host describes herself in as a mixture of Oprah Winfrey with a dash of Martha Stewart thrown in.

Speaking on Tyra, NYT staff writer says: “Her brand, like her trademark ‘tough but still smiling’ smile, is consistent in all her shows: serious about the frivolous; empathetic and empowering, and always, always aimed at young women, across all races. It’s girly TV with a punch”.

Cool cover. It's great to see Tyra garnering so much recognition outside of the modelling world. It goes to show that sky really is the limit. More power to her.

The Best You Never Heard: Ashanti, Monica, Mis-Teeq & LL Cool JHaving been rested on the bench for a few weeks, The Best You Never Heard returns this week with little known cuts by Ashanti, Monica, UK trio Misteeq as well as LL Cool J. Do you have any suggestions for future instalments? Drop me an email at sam@thatgrapejuice.net
-----------------------------------------------

Ashanti - Freedom

Despite the fact that Ashanti's third studio album 2004's 'Concrete Rose' achieved Platinum status, the record was largely dubbed a commercial failure for the once Princess of Murder INC. That said, I felt as though the LP was Ashanti's most solid to date and served up what IMO is one of her strongest offerings in the form of 'Freedom'. Raw, vocally lucid and a welcome change from her expected norm, the song is an awesomely constructed response to her critics.

Listen: Freedom

-----------------------------------------------

Monica - Getaway

Though the ridiculous decision to release 'Everytime The Beat Drops' effectively rendered Monica's 2006 album 'The Makings of Me' dead on arrival, it doesn't take away from the fact that the LP was far from poor; the record stands as one of my more recent favourites. Album closer 'Getaway' sees the songstress show her vulnerable side in a ballad that reminds us of the rarity of this voice we have grown alongside with since her mid 90's debut. Great track.

-----------------------------------------------

Mis-Teeq - Scandalous

Some of our UK readers will remember Misteeq; the trio, consistent of Sabrina, Alesha and Su Elise, for a brief moment in time dominated what is now the non-existent homegrown R&B market here in the UK. Though the ladies split in 2004, they left behind a selection of chart hits, including their most successful single 'Scandalous'. Produced by Stargate, this banger, one of the girl's last releases, ensured the ladies went out on a high. Random tidbit: the song was the theme to Halle Berry's ill-fated 'Catwoman' movie.

-----------------------------------------------

LL Cool J - Down The Aisle (ft. 112)

LL Cool J's 2006 LP 'Todd Smith' oddly wasn't billed as a collabo record, despite only one track featuring solely the rapper himself. Despite the album boasting joint efforts with the likes of Mary J. Blige, Jennifer Lopez and Ginuwine, it was the 112 assisted 'Down The Aisle' that was the standout IMO. Having left the bravado on the back-burner, the song's concept - growing and tying the knot with that special someone - is real refreshing. Good stuff.

Listen: Down The Aisle (ft. 112)

Competition: 'The Great Debaters' DVD Give-Away To celebrate the recent DVD release of Denzel Washington's 'The Great Debaters', That Grape Juice are giving you the opportunity to win a special 2-disc copy of the Golden Globe nominated movie, which also stars Forest Whitaker.

Plot: The film, loosely based on a true story, revolves around the efforts of debate coach Melvin B. Tolson (Denzel Washington) at historically black Wiley College to place his team on equal footing with whites in the American south during the 1930s, when Jim Crow laws were common and lynch mobs were a pervasive fear for blacks. In the movie as in reality, the Wiley team eventually succeeds to the point where they are able to take part in a debate with Harvard University.

In order to be in with a chance of winning this must-see movie, answer the following correctly:

Forest Whitaker won an Oscar for Best Actor in 2007. Which film was it for?

a) Dreamgirls

b) The Last King of Scotland

c) Street Kings

Email your answer as well as your full name, age, and address to competitions@thatgrapejuice.net. Please be sure to put 'Great Debaters Comp' as the subject. Winners will be selected randomly from all correct answers. Competition ends Monday 2nd June. Good luck!

T.I. To Star In Reality Show It seems T.I. is the latest star to hop on the Reality TV bandwagon. The 27 year old has partnered with MTV for the project:

“[MTV] will follow the hip-hop star as he performs more than 1,000 of community service before beginning to serve his one-year prison sentence next spring. Ish Entertainment is behind the untitled series, which has scored an eight-episode order from MTV. Cameras already chronicled T.I.’s release from house arrest, and shooting will start in earnest this summer, leading up to his return to jail in early 2009. MTV plans to air the show some time soon after that.” {Source}

Though I'm kinda iffy about the prospect of yet another reality show, I must say the concept sounds pretty interesting. Having enjoyed Lil' Kim's pre-jail show 'Countdown To Lockdown' a few years back, this one definitely seems like it'll be worth tuning into. It's just a shame that our artists aren't starring in such shows for more postive reasons.

Stars Come Out For 'Sex & The City' Premiere Stars Come Out For 'Sex & The City' Premiere
The New York premiere for the much anticipated 'Sex & The City' movie took place yesterday. A number of high profile celebs made an appearance including Oscar winner Jennifer Hudson - who stars in the movie, Mary J. Blige, Michelle Williams and Lil' Kim - who also makes a brief cameo in the flick.

I must say, Jennifer Hudson and Michelle Williams looked particularly on-point. Even Kim made a decent showing; the age old adage 'less is more' definitely seemed to be one Kim took on board, as, having left the drag queen make-up at home, she looked the best she has done in a long while. Mary on the other hand looks like the gruelling tour schedule has caught up with her; she looked tired.

Usher stopped by MTV's TRL today in Times Square, New York to promote the release of his much anticipated album 'Here I Stand', which was released today in the US. Though briefly talking over the the LP, Usher had something else in kind that he wanted to voice out. Check out the vid below:

Wow. I actually think he's giving his critics more to talk about, as the Tameka drama is evidently getting to him. For such a seasoned celebrity, I wouldn't have expected such an outburst. If the negative publicity - stemming from the media obsession with Tameka - was still anything of importance to people, I doubt 'Love In The Club' would have achieved the success it did. Yet still Usher insists on keep bringing it up. Though I believe his intentions were good, I think he should go sit down somewhere.

Ray J Kicked Out Of Hotel; Caught With Drugs?According to TMZ, Ray J got himself into a little trouble over the weekend. Check out their report:

R&B boy toy Ray J was tossed out on his behind early Saturday morning from the Hyatt Regency in D.C., because Brandy's bro allegedly had a stash of marijuana and a drug called "Boat" (a club drug) ... this according to TMZ sources.

We're told Ray J went to his room after partying it up, when hotel management got a complaint. It appears security went up to the room where they allegedly found all the drug stuff.

Our sources say the singer tried to bribe hotel security so he could stay but they didn't bite. We're told Ray J went crazy, arguing like a mutha. Eventually, Mr. J's own security came to the hotel and carted him away.

Police were called, but no one was busted.

And the supreme insult -- Ray J had to check into a Holiday Inn down the street. Oh the humanity.

Ray J's rep tells us "The altercation did not directly affect Ray J -- it was people in his entourage. But he did the gentlemanly thing and left the hotel anyway."

A mess.

Ciara - 'Click' Ciara's contribution to the 'Sex & The City' soundtrack, a track titled 'Click', has surfaced. Written by Rico Love and produced by Salaam Remi, the whimsical cut is a solid effort. My only gripe is that the song sounds near identical to Fergie's hit 'Glamorous' - to the point where it's unavoidably obvious. I had to double check that it wasn't that song's producer Polow Da Don recycling beats again (lol). Still, a pretty good track all the same.

Missy Elliott Names New Album 'FANomenal'After lengthy hiatus, Missy Elliott is set to release her new LP 'FANomenal' later this summer. . Addressing the reasoning for choosing the album's title, Missy said the following:
“I had a contest and we had so many people taking part. There were so many fans and I decided I wanted to dedicate it to my fans and spell it with F-A-N, FANomenal. I have had so many people sticking with Missy from day one. So this album is for them.” {Source}

Word has it the album will be preceded by the first official single 'Act A Fool'. I'm not really feeling the album's title, but I guess she justified her reason pretty well. 'Ching-A-Ling' wet our appetite earlier this year; it'll be interesting to see what Missy serves up with the record itself.

I am telling you this because of the same reason I tell you when im having great times, life is too short to be fake. Hold on to your kids if you have them, protect them and show them you love them everyday you wake up and see them, dont take a second you get to hug them teach them and care for them for granted. You can have all the material wealth in the universe but it is NOTHING compared to having your family. I am thankful for all of my blessings and im not one to question God’s perfect plan, so I leave you with great love and thanks for the love that was sent earlier on my pervious blog to my son. Of course I need to take some time and handle my loss, STAY FOCUSED PEOPLE. Its not promised to any of us.

While Rihanna gears up for the release of the the revamped version of her 'Good Girl Gone Bad: Reloaded' LP, a video preview of the tour DVD (which comes packaged with the set) has surfaced. Keri Hilson - Energy (Full Version)The full version of Keri Hilson's first official single 'Energy' premiered today. Some of you may remember, a snippet of the cut had been floating around a few weeks back. Having heard The Runaways produced track in its entirety, I'm a little more optimistic about Keri and her team knowing what they are doing with the project. Much of the material I've heard from Keri thus far appeals to me more than this, however it's evident they are going with a radio friendly, hook-heavy, crossover cut to cater to the masses - hence broadening her appeal.

Saying that, I'm pretty anxious to see which direction her debut LP 'In A Perfect World' (due September 23rd) will venture into.

'Here I Stand': Will You be Buying? After a near 4 year absence from the music scene, R&B star Usher is back with his much anticipated new album 'Here I Stand' - which hits stores worldwide today.

The massive success of the set's first single 'Love In This Club' shows that there is evidently a thirst for the 29 year old Grammy winner's latest material. That Grape Juice wants to know, though, whether you will be picking up 'Here I Stand'? If so, why? If not, why? Heard the album already (lol lol)? What do yo think of it? What are your favourites etc? Feel free to drop your views in the 'comments' section...

That Grape Juice Interview: TamiaThat Grape Juice caught up with R&B songstress Tamia last month as she prepared for the start of her North American tour. During the course of our conversation, the mother of two talked, among other things, music, her role as a mother and wife, the highs and lows of being an independent artist as well as living with Multiple Sclerosis. An insightful listen, if I must so myself :) Enjoy.

This week's From The Vault video comes in form of Jodeci's 1995 smash 'Love U 4 Life'. Arguably one of the greatest R&B groups to emerge in the 90's, Jodeci delivered what many believed to be their career defining LP (their last) with 'The Show, The After Party, The Hotel' - from which 'Love U 4 Life' - a personal favourite of mine - was lifted. Check out the video, which features cameos from TLC's T-Boz as well as Rev Run below:

Watching this back and reminiscing on some of their other hits such as 'Freak N You' 'Lately' and 'Cry For You', really makes the group's current predicament (cash strapped and drugged out) all the more unfortunate. Still, the legacy they left behind, as evidenced by the string of hits they racked up, will ensure that they will forever have a place in R&B history.

Usher & Justin Timberlake To Collaborate?Though Usher's much hyped new album 'Here I Stand' isn't due in shops for a few more days yet, the Grammy winner is already talking about the projects re-release - revealing that a collaboration with old rival Justin Timberlake is potentially in the works. Some of you may remember, in response to a Rollingstone cover hailing Timberlake as the new King of Pop (nonsense anyway, as MJ has that title forever IMO), Usher said: "There simply is no comparison between me and Justin. He can't even stand in the same lane as me, ever.".

In an interview with The Daily Mail newspaper over here in the UK, he seems to have changed his tune:

"I regret it, because he's a great friend of mine now. I was young and didn't know better. We were both being kids and he turned out to be a really cool guy, and we're talking about doing something together for the repackaging of my album. If we ever worked together, though, it would be the biggest record ever."

This talk of a re-release prior to the original album even hitting stores kinda leaves a salty taste in my mouth. After all, why not deliver the best product you can to begin with? Anyway, I'm indifferent to the idea of a Justin collabo. Not to beat on a dead horse, but the Superbowl aftermath has made for me to lose respect for Justin both artistically and as a person....

Any thoughts?

Continuing along the road to career redemption, Whitney Houston performed at Morocco's 'Festival Mawazine' last night. Check out her performance her career defining hit 'I Will Always Love You':

Though the video quality was pretty rubbish, I really enjoyed her performance. Obviously not her best vocal showing, however she has evidently come leaps and bounds vocally in comparison to some of her performances in the last few years. Watching this really offers hope that she may still be able to serve up the goods with her new album (due November).

What do you think of the performance?

Brooke Valentine - 'Badunkadunk'R&B singer Brooke Valentine is making another attempt at hitting it big. For those unfamiliar with Brooke, the 23 year old first surfaced in 2005 with the smash 'Girlfight'; after the release of her debut LP 'Chain Letter', shortly after, things went quiet. She was unceremoniously dropped from distributor Virgin Records (though is still signed with label Subliminal), with her sophomore effort 'Physical Education' being effectively shelved in the process.

Though 'Badunkadunk' isn't a bad effort, it certainly leaves a lot to be desired. In an increasingly crowded industry (especially among the 'R&B Chicks'), Brooke will have to come a little harder material/substance-wise, as this is a kinda 'samey' and will do next to nothing to set her apart. She has a lot of potential IMO, she just needs to tap into it.

Hit or Miss?

Following the uber short video that premiered for Kanye West's 'Flashing Lights' a few months back, the second of, reportedly, three accompanying clips has made its debut. On the one hand, I commend Kanye for going left-field with the concept of his vids, it would help, though, if I could understand what the hell is going on in it lol.

What do you think of the video?

Rihanna Talks Image In a recent interview with The Guardian over here in the UK, R&B/Pop star Rihanna spoke about her 'edgy' image, asserting that it was her own decision to deviate from the industry norm of 'long blonde' hair who she identified Beyonce, Ciara, Christina Millian and Mariah as rocking:

"I felt like the whole world had long, curly, flowy blonde hair. Ciara, Beyonce, Mariah, Christina Milian. Everybody wanted to be like everybody else. So I cut my hair and they made me put my long hair back in as extensions. The second time, I didn't have any discussions, nothing. I just cut it, I dyed it black, I went into the studio making music my way. I found myself all at once. I like things strong, edgy, a little to the left. I don't like things that are expected - nothing cliched. When I first started, I didn't know anything. I didn't really have a say. The second album, I got a little more freedom"

Granted today Rihanna's image seems pretty legit, I find her comments real hard to swallow. IMO the whole 'I'm was good girl, now I'm bad...look at my black hair and dominatrix outfits' was overly contrived and screamed 'record label construct'.

Usher Covers Entertainment Weekly

With the release of Usher's much anticipated LP 'Here I Stand' just a few days away (May 27th), the R&B heavyweight continues to do the promotional rounds, this time appearing in this week's issue of Entertainment Weekly. The 29 year old opened up about a number of interesting issues - some for the first time. Check out a few quotes below:

On His Mother Not Attending His Wedding:

“My mother made a decision not to come to my wedding because she didn’t really agree with my decision,” he explains, declining to specify whether she disagreed with his choice of wife or his decision to fire her. ”I don’t know why,” he offers simply. ”She’s never told me and I’ve never asked her….It hurt me very much not to see her there ’cause I would’ve liked for her to be there, not to mention that I paid so much money for her to be accommodated and her behind didn’t show up. [Laughs] But just as she’s made stands, so have I.”

On Usher V

On Nov. 26, Usher and Tameka welcomed their son, Usher Raymond V. The new addition to his family served as an olive branch, helping heal the strained relationship with Usher's mom. ''I have a beautiful baby boy that she's in love with,'' he says. ''She's very happy, and he makes us all a better family, period.''

On Meaning Behind 'Here I Stand':

“It’s not me lashing out at anyone; it was the hottest name for the project, and a testimony to how certain I was about certain issues.”

The rift between Usher and his mother had escaped my mind in the midst of all his current success. It's good to see him finally addressing the matter, all the same though. It seems all differences have been put aside, which can only be seen as a good thing.
