Chris Brown's video for new single 'Forever' premiered today. The track is lifted from the upcoming re-release of his sophomore LP 'Exclusive' (due June 3rd). About the clip; put simply, I think it's wack, as is the song. However I do commend Chris for experimenting with a 'different' sound and trying to appeal to a wider audience. It's just a shame the execution fell short of his (label's) intentions.

What do you think of the video?

Girlicious stopped by The Sauce yesterday to promote their new single 'Like Me' (currently #3 on the iTunes chart). As well as being interviewed, the girls also gave an impromptu acapella rendition of the song. Check it out:

Perhaps it's because I see a lot of potential with the group that I'm still rooting for them, because that acapella was a mess...a hot mess, at that. It'll be interesting to see if they can deliver the goods with their future showings. Their self-titled debut is set to hit stores July 1st.

Usher: 'Chris Brown Is The Next Me' R&B star Usher recently spoke on the young talent in the today's industry - more specifically teen singer Chris Brown:

Usher has hailed fellow singer Chris Brown as a younger version of himself - insisting the star will “follow the same path”. Usher, 29, was just 15 when he released his self-titled debut album in 1994 and has gone on to forge a highly successful music career. And Usher is convinced Brown, 19, is all set to follow in his footsteps and dominate the R&B scene.

He says, “All of this young energy is great for the industry. Chris is the guy who dances and sings, which is a lot like I do and did as a young artist as well. If time serves us correctly, and artists are continuing to better themselves, then hopefully he’ll follow the same path that I did.” {Source}

While it's good to see Usher giving props to the crop of younger stars on the come-up, I can't help but feel he's a tad on the self-indulgent side. I mean after all, he along with the Justin's and co are evidently still students at the 'Michael Jackson School of Performing'. To be honest, I can't pick any one male artist of today that has carved out a lasting trademark in the way the MJ's and Prince's did.

Kelly Rowland is back on this side of pond to promote her new single 'Daylight'. The R&B star stopped by The Paul O' Grady Show yesterday to perform the song:

Good stuff, Kelly did her thing. She's really becoming a lot more 'at home' on stage these days (solo), which is something I'm anticipating seeing more of in future performances too.

With rapper Busta Rhymes readying his latest LP 'Blessed' for a June 17th release, two new videos in support of the set have surfaced; official single 'We Made It' (ft. Linkin Park)' (above) and buzz cut 'Don't Touch Me (Throw The Water On 'Em)' (below). While I'm not really feeling the clip for 'Don't Touch Me', I'm really liking the 'We Made It' song and video - very different for Busta.

Soulja Lines Up New Album & More Despite being ridiculed as a 'one hit wonder', teen star Soulja Boy is currently readying his sophomore LP as well as several other ventures. Check out the report via MTV.com:
"My new album is called Back to School," he revealed last week in Atlanta. "Basically, it is really me taking it back to the basics. It's time to start studying again. Make it happen, man. ... The time I drop the album, everybody is gonna be going back to school. My fans are 21 and under. That's what I'm focusing on."

Soulja may have rapped about getting F's in school, but since he's become a celeb, the young'un has obviously garnered knowledge in economics. He has a full blitz tied into the album. Besides the record, he's dropping the Soulja Boy sunglasses, his own signature shoes called Yums, as well as a cartoon titled "Bad Little Homies" about him and his friends. Not to be left out is the ever-essential clothing, S.O.D.s. It's named after his record label, Stacks on Deck. On deck are his protégés the All-Stars. Topping it all off will be the Soulja Boy and Friends Tour, featuring himself and other young acts.

Soulja said that since he's making all that money now, he'll be willing to open his album up for collaborations this time. He produced 90 percent of his debut and had no big-name features.

"I'm on Interscope [Records]. I could have went to 50 [Cent], Polow [Da Don], Timbaland," he said about his first effort. "I feel as though I had to prove myself. [This time,] I'mma look around [for tracks], whether it's a producer like Polow or a producer nobody ever heard of. For my fanbase, people who tune in to Soulja Boy, I think a good feature would be me and Chris Brown. Soulja Boy featuring Chris Brown — my audience would be like, 'Oh my God!' "
Didn't his first album (which was garbage IMO) just come out?! I guess he knows his '15' could be up at anytime (they arguably they are already), so he's keeping it moving. I can't knock his hustle. Saying that, I find it a little hard to believe any of the artists he name-dropped would ever think of doing a collabo with him. Imagine 50 and Soulja Boy on the same track LMAO.

As reported yesterday, Whitney Houston performed at Tobago's Plymouth Jazz Festival on Sunday. Reports have been suggesting the 44 year old disappointed with her set, however you can judge for yourself by watching her rendition of 'I Will Always Love You' at the show below:

Hmm. Not as bad as I thought, yet still left a lot to be desired. On the one hand, it's great to see her sing with a clear, polished tone; however 'The Voice' was largely absent from this overly safe performance - showing itself sporadically between the 'talky' majority. Still, watching this offers hope that Whitney could very well crank out a successful well-sung 'Studio LP' (See: Mariah Carey). Whether her unmatched live vocal ability returns to past glories will be interesting to see. Whitney's much-anticipated new album is tentatively slated for a November release.

Amateur(ish), yet pretty decent. They have a long way to go. For those not in the know, Girlicious are the creation of Robin Antin, the brainchild behind the Pussycat Dolls. The aim when forming the band, as seen on the show, was to produce a more 'Urban' PCD-esque group.

Whitney Hits A Sour Note In Tobago According to our friends over at AOL Black Voices, Whitney Houston's recent concert at Tobago's Plymouth Jazz Festival yesterday (April 27th) was a shambles:
The 'Greatest Love of All' singer performed on the last night of the festival, just before headliner Rod Stewart took the stage.

Houston opened her show with 'Its Not Right, But Its Okay' and by her third song, 'Saving All My Love,' the once soprano's newfound tenor tone was in full rasp.

Delivering only seven songs during her 30 minute set, Houston was reportedly paid a whopping $3 million for the show.

Though journalists were flown in from all over the world, Houston refused to allow media and photographers within 200 feet of the stage. She brought her own photographer to the venue and only he was allowed to shoot her performance.

Wearing a white gown with a single shoulder strap, Houston skipped around the stage and continuously shouted to the crowd: "I love you Trinidad !'

Unfortunately, the concert was in Tobago!

Locals shouted back each time: "This is Tobago!"

The 44-year-old music icon ambitiously attempted 'And I'll Always Love You,' however she struggled through the build up and knew better than attempt the high finish.

She bowed and then squatted after her pseudo-encore of Chaka Khan's 'I'm Every Woman,' which Houston also recorded for 'The Bodyguard' soundtrack.
With the continued reports of Whitney's diminished vocal state, I'm beginning to wonder whether making a 'comeback' is in her best interest (the album is slated for a November release). For, I'm more than sure she'll be torn to shreds by the media and public alike should she attempt to turn in such performances back home in the States. Here's hoping she gets herself together ASAP.

The Best You Never Heard: JoJo, Teedra Moses, Tamia & Michael Jackson

This week's edition of 'The Best You Never Heard' serves up songs by teen star JoJo, Teedra Moses, Tamia and the King of Pop Michael Jackson. Drop me your suggestions for future installments at sam@thatgrapejuice.net

-----------------------------------------------

JoJo - The Way You Do Me

JoJo's 2006 effort 'The High Road' saw the teen star embrace a more Urban-inspired sound; one of the standout examples of this was the Swizz Beats (yes, Swizz Beats) produced 'The Way You Do Me'. Now, depending on how you wish to interpret the song's lyrical content, it can be considered somewhat risque - especially taking into account her age. Saying that, there's no denying this one's a banger

Listen: The Way You Do Me

-----------------------------------------------

Teedra Moses - You Better Tell Her

Songstress Teedra Moses has been steadily building up an army of loyal followers since the release of her critically acclaimed LP 'Complex Simplicity' back in 2006. Indeed the former stylist-to-the-stars served up one of that year's most solid efforts IMO. Filled with great cut after great cut, 'You Better Tell Her' stands as one of my personal favourites.

Listen: You Better Tell Her

-----------------------------------------------

Tamia - Too Grown For That

Lifted from Tamia's most recent album 'Between Friends', the Darkchild produced 'Too Grown For That' makes this week's edition for a number of reasons. Aside from the fact that it's one of the album's most solid tracks, the uptempo, club-ready production is a welcome departure from her traditional (mid-tempo/ballad) forte. A true testament to Tamia's versatility as an artist.

Listen: Too Grown For That

-----------------------------------------------

Michael Jackson - We've Had Enough

Taken from Michael's 2004 greatest hits set ' The Ultimate Collection', the previously unreleased 'We've Had Enough' shows that the King of Pop is still at the top of his game. This rousing track is very much in the vein of Michael's worldwide hit 'Earth Song'. Laced with enough 'Michaelisms' to echo the 'glory days', this one is a winner.

Listen: We've Had Enough

-----------------------------------------------

This week's From The Vault clip comes in form of Janet Jackson's 1997 performance of 'I Get Lonely' on the Rosie O' Donald Show. Though renown for her status as an all-round performer, this stripped-down rendition of the song, lifted from the critically praised 'Velvet Rope LP', serves as perhaps the rarest showing of Janet's oft-underrated vocal ability. By no means the best vocalist, however Ms. Jackson can certainly hold her own LIVE. Check it out:

Great performance. It certainly wouldn't be a bad thing if Janet were to put the headset down every now and then, to show the naysayers what she can really do.

Check CNN's behind the scenes look at Solange's new video 'I Decided':

Watching this really has me amped for the video. Solange's label (Geffen/Music World) as well as her management seem to be pulling out all the stops; the Melina directed clip really looks to be something. Though I wasn't entirely sold on the song initially, with the summer fast approaching, the likelihood of it catching on is a strong possibility. Random tidbit: It's real good seeing 'Big Sis' taking on a mentor-like role with Solange.

Michael Jackson Album Update According to the New York Post, the King of Pop Michael Jackson is making serious moves to ensure his 'comeback' LP is a winner:

He's [Jackson] hired music producers RedOne and Akon to mastermind his new album, and the trio began working together at the Palms recording studio in Las Vegas Wednesday. "Michael is producing the album himself and then will sell it to a record company when he's finished," our spy said. To maintain the utmost concentration, "Michael has banned his kids from the recording studio. He realizes this is very important and doesn't want any distractions." Jacko has also sworn off women for the time being, despite never seeming to care much for them anyway. Jackson - who supposedly had been seeing his children's nanny, Grace Rwaramba - told pals, "He's not going to be involved in any personal relationships with women until he gets this record done. He's dumped the nanny - she's not around any more."

The 'no women' thing made for a good laugh; it's Michael, come on now. In any case, I'm really amped for MJ's new record. The concept of Michael selling the album to a major label who will then distribute and market it is the most logical option for the LP's chances of success IMO. Can't wait.

Diva Mariah Carey performed a set today on Good Morning America to promote her 'E=MC²' LP. During her rendition of 'Touch My Body' a technical slip-up occurred. To say things didn't go as planned would be an understatement. Check it out:

On the one hand, I'm in hysterics, on the other I'm thinking, damn. Absolutely inexcusable. Here we have someone who is commonly referred to as one of music's greatest voices, inadvertently exposed lip-synching on live television. SMH at Mariah asking her backing singers to stop singing her part, when it was obviously her pre-recorded backing track playing up. Knowing full well I'm probably volunteering myself to be 'Lamb Stew', this really was like watching the death of 'The Voice'. I mean, come on now; when she tried reaching for the notes at the end she sounded like she'd been chewing on cigarette butts. A mess.

Remembering Lisa 'Left Eye' Lopes Today, April 25th 2008, marks six years since the tragic passing of TLC's Lisa 'Left Eye' Lopes. The flamboyant, much-loved star was killed in a car accident in the Honduras in 2002. Lopes was 30 years old.

The winners of CW's 'Pussycat Dolls Presents: Girlicious' were revealed yesterday; Nicole, Natalie, Chrystina and Tiffany are the ladies who made the final cut. During the show, the video for the group's debut single 'Like Me premiered alongside the clip for their buzz single 'Stupid Sh*t'. Check out both vids below:

Like Me

Wow. For a new group they are pretty good, real polished. Though the song is hardly groundbreaking, it's processed, 'fast-food' music at its best. The striking similarities between Girlicious and the Pussycat Dolls can be attributed to the fact they were both founded/managed by Robin Antin - the brainchild behind PCD's success. IMO these girls possess more potential for the simple fact that a) there isn't 10+ of them whose names are a mystery and b) *all* of the members actually sing. With Danity Kane running things at the moment, Pussycat Dolls due out very soon and now Girlicious, the girl-group scene is heating up this year. It appears the release of R. Kelly's forthcoming album '12 Play: 4th Quarter' may be sooner than we think; the video for the LP's first single 'Hairbraider' premiered yesterday. For his sake, this had better be a buzz single of sorts, as it's not cutting it as a lead single at all. With Kelly's last few releases, it's been the great singles that have compensated for, otherwise, lackluster records IMO; so, dropping this kinda has me wondering about what the album will be serving up.

Carey's 'E=MC²' Soars Straight To #1 Mariah Carey and Island Def Jam will have much for celebration this week; the diva's latest LP 'E=MC²' landed atop of the Billboard 200 chart after selling a whopping 463,000 copies in the US in its first week. The figures are a career best for Carey, whose previous highest debut was 2005's 'Mimi' which also bowed at #1 selling 404,000 units in its premiere week.

Carey now stands beside Janet Jackson and Madonna as having the second most #1 albums among female artists (6 a piece). With 8 #1 albums to her name, Barbara Streisand remains in the lead. {Source}

Congratulations to Mimi. Yes random, but I'm gonna need Ms. Jackson to get her stuff together and make this 'Discipline' project work. Mariah and Madonna are showing that age isn't a factor, it's the machine you have behind you. Hopefully Janet/her people get things moving - and fast.

Usher - 'Love In The Club' (Part II) (ft. Beyonce & Lil' Wayne)Fresh off the chart-topping success of Usher's 'Love In The Club', 'Part II' has surfaced featuring Beyonce and Lil' Wayne. New vocals, new production, new everything. I'm actually feeling this a lot more than the original. Awesome.

R&B star Mario continues to shine on Dancing With The Stars. Check out his performance of the Rumba with partner Karina on this week's show:

SMH at Len Goodman calling them 'the Strumpet and the Giggalo'. In any case, it's good to see Mario doing his thing.

The video for Alicia Keys' new single 'Teenage Love Affair' made its debut today. Inspired by Spike Lee's movie 'School Daze', the video serves as one of Alicia's best clips to date. The engaging concept captured the essence of the song's lyrical content fantastically. Seeing the stunningly beautiful Alicia get her little choreography on, a rarity, was also nice touch. Great song, even better video.

Swizz Beats & Mashonda SplitAccording to AllHipHop.com, super producer Swizz Beats and wife of four years R&B singer Mashonda are to divorce. The news comes just a year after the couple welcomed their first child Kassem Jr. Check out the report:

A representative for Swizz Beatz didn’t specify the reason for the separation, but stated the split was “on amicable terms.”

“Their union was one shared in love and deep admiration for one another. For the last seven months, the two have been working on establishing a formidable friendship, being great parents to their son, and remaining great supporters of each other's careers,” a representative told AllHipHop.com. “The couple has asked that their privacy be respected at this time.”

Despite a looming divorce, the pair will move forward with their entrepreneurial and musical efforts.

Swizz is presently working on a follow-up album to his 2007 sophomore CD, One Man Band Man.

Mashonda is expected to launch an upscale swimwear line, a new venture in music, and hopes to found an arts-based school for children.

That's a shame. Word has it that, despite the 'we're still friends' statement put out, the split is in fact very messy. I'm beginning to wonder if industry relationships can actually last the distance...

Fergie - 'Labels Or Love' As earlier reported, Pop star Fergie recorded the opening number to the much-hyped 'Sex & The City' movie (in theatres May 27th); the track itself, 'Labels Or Love', surfaced today. Sampling the popular show's theme tune, the song will most appeal to fans of the Fergie/Black Eyed Peas sound. Pretty decent. I must say though, I'm more looking forward to Jennifer Hudson's confirmed contribution to the soundtrack.

Estelle Covers BLEU Magazine'American Boy' singer Estelle features in the Spring 2008 issue of BLEU Magazine; the UK sensation is the first artist to receive a double cover in the magazine's history.

Speaking exclusively to BLEU Magazine's contributing writer Lenox Magee, Estelle dishes on how the UK does not know how to promote black artists. She also addresses the Lauryn Hill comparisons:

"I think they compare me to her (Lauryn Hill) because I'm dark-skinned and I sing and rap. But, if they're saying the music is just as great, then compare me all day because I'll be really happy about that."

The issue hits newsstands across the US on April 29th, as does Estelle's great new album 'Shine'.

Mariah Carey - 'Bye Bye' (Remix) (ft. Jay-Z)This Jay-Z assisted remix of Mariah Carey's current single 'Bye Bye' surfaced just a few hours ago. Perhaps it's due to the fact that I'm not sold on the original version, but this doesn't really do much for me. Unlike Mariah's past remixes, which oft are equally as good, if not better than the originals, this is kinda blah. On a more positive note, the track is worth a listen, if only to hear Jay's untouchable flow.

Mariah Speaks On Leona Comparisons Diva Mariah Carey, whose latest effort 'E=MC²' is set to top the US charts this week, spoke recently on the comparisons between herself and UK singing sensation Leona Lewis:

"Honestly, there has been so many, 'This is the new her,' and I'm like, 'OK, show me the new her. Can she come and work for me and be my double?' And I'm not particular talking about this girl Leona, because I only heard her once and I didn't really hear a true similarity, particularly in the style of music. It is what it is and critics have compared me to so many people who are not really singers, and they're certainly not writers". {Source}

Is it me or does she come across kind of catty here? I mean, not for a long while has a voice like Leona's risen to prominence, yet Mariah seems to see this as a bad thing. Yes, she's worked incredibly hard to reach the status she enjoys today, but I've never been a fan of the whole veterans feeling threatened by the newcomers thing.

Beyonce & Jay-Z Sign Marriage LicenceWhile Beyonce and Jay-Z continue to remain tight-lipped about their much-talked about wedding two weeks ago, the pair made a very public declaration of their union. This past Friday the pair finally signed their marriage licence - before it expired, according to PEOPLE.com:
Scarsdale Town Clerk Donna Conkling tells PEOPLE the license – which lists the wedding date as April 4 – was received on Friday afternoon. The couple applied for the license just three days before the ceremony.

Interesting. It's a bit puzzling as to why they left it so long to sign the document - which usually is signed at the actual ceremony....

Janet Tour to Kick Off September 11th In news that will, no doubt, please Janet Jackson's army of fans, the Pop superstar has confirmed to E! Online that her much-anticipated world tour will start on September 11th. According to the 'Feedback' singer, promotion for the her album 'Discipline' is on-going, with tour rehearsal commencing in a months time. {Source}

While it's great to see Janet pressing on with promotion and the tour, I sure as hell hope that Def Jam/her people have some plan in place to help shift some more units of the record. After all, healthy album sales, for the most part, equal good ticket sales.

Will you be checking for Janet's tour?

Fergie Preps 'Dutchess' Re-ReleaseAccording to MTV, Fergie is set to re-release her multi-Platinum smash 'The Dutchess'. Boasting several new tracks including her collaboration with Nelly, 'Party People', as well as 'Labels & Love' - the theme of the much-anticipated 'Sex In The City' movie, the revamped LP will hit stores on May 27th.

In response to the question of why she decided to re-issue the record, the Black Eyed Peas front-woman was surprisingly candid with her explanation:
That's what everyone's doing nowadays, I hear," she laughed. "The label came to me and said this would be a good idea, and I thought, 'Well, OK, if this is another way for me to put out these songs that I've been wanting people to hear, then great.' The music business is changing, and this repackage thing is a new way for people to put out songs that they want people to hear, so I'm cool with it."

Well, at least she was honest. It still baffles me as to why the label would re-issue an almost 2 year old album. Surely everyone who wanted it the first time has it already?

Ciara - 'Supernatural' (Snippet) With R&B star Ciara hard at work on her third studio album tentatively titled 'Fantasy Ride', a snippet of one of the supposedly featured track has surfaced. Though the smooth mid-tempo 'Supernatural' isn't a bad effort, it certainly leaves a lot to be desired. It'll be interesting to see what the album, due out in the Autumn, will have on offer - material better than this I should hope.

Rapper Khia recently made an appearance of VH1 reality show 'Miss Rap Supreme' - as a contestant. The show pits new female MC's against each other, who battle it out for the $100,000 prize money. What Khia was doing on this is beyond me, but check out the hilarity below:

Kanye & Alexis Call It QuitsFollowing mounting speculation, Kanye West's fiancée Alexis Phifer has confirmed that she and the rapper have, indeed, ended their relationship. The pair had been engaged for a year and a half, having dated on and off since 2002. Check out the report via PEOPLE.com:
"It's always sad when things like this end, and we remain friends,” Phifer tells PEOPLE. "I wish him the best in his future and all of his endeavors. He's one of the most talented people I've ever met."

Phifer was spotted on the red carpet sans her engagement ring at an "Evenings in Vogue" event on Thursday night in New York, where her clothing line, Ghita, was featured.

"They'd been having problems," a pal of West's says. "Kanye is really focused on his show; he's putting everything into the show right now. Alexis is a nice girl, but Kanye has been going through a rough time. They hit a rough patch and for now they've split."

According to the friend, Phifer and West, both 30, had been spending less time together in the last few weeks as the Grammy-winning star prepared for his nationwide "Glow in the Dark" tour. "I haven't seen [Alexis] around at all the last few times I’ve seen him recently," the friend added.

Another one bites the dust...
